Universal Studios Bedford: The Latest Update – August 2026 🎢
There continues to be exciting progress surrounding one of the biggest developments ever proposed for the Bedford area – the Universal United Kingdom Resort.
Set to transform the former brickworks site around Kempston Hardwick and Stewartby, the development is moving forward, with 2031 remaining the target opening year.
For those living, working, investing or considering buying property in Bedford and the surrounding areas, the scale of the project – and the potential impact it could have on the local property market – is significant.
Work is now underway
Perhaps the biggest update is that activity is now taking place on the ground.
Site stabilisation and enabling works are underway, representing an important step towards full construction of the resort.
As part of these works, Manor Road is subject to a 24-hour through-traffic closure from 27 July until 5 October 2026, with further traffic management expected as the project progresses.
Government construction-management documentation has also recently been updated, covering works including mass grading, temporary roads and accesses, and the demolition of Vine Cottage and the Guard House.
Mass grading is particularly significant as it involves preparing and reshaping the land ahead of the main construction programme.
Thousands of jobs expected
The economic impact of Universal coming to Bedford could be enormous.
More than 100 people have already been employed in the UK on the project, while Universal has reportedly received over 33,000 expressions of interest from people looking for employment opportunities.
Once fully underway, the development is expected to support approximately:
- 20,000 construction jobs
- 8,000 permanent jobs
- Around £50 billion in wider economic benefit
For Bedford and the surrounding towns and villages, this could bring a substantial increase in employment opportunities and investment into the area.
What will Universal Bedford include?
The plans are for a full-scale Universal theme park featuring several themed lands, making this far more than a small regional attraction.
Alongside the theme park, plans include a 500-room hotel together with a substantial retail, dining and entertainment complex.
Bedford Borough Council estimates that the resort could initially attract approximately 8.5 million visitors every year, potentially increasing to around 12.5 million annually.
One of the biggest questions remains unanswered, however – which Universal franchises will feature in the park?
There has been considerable speculation surrounding names including Harry Potter, Nintendo, Jurassic World and Paddington, but Universal has yet to officially confirm the attractions or themed lands planned for the Bedford resort.

From an estate agency perspective, this is where the development becomes particularly interesting.
A project creating thousands of permanent jobs and attracting millions of visitors each year has the potential to generate increased demand for homes, rental properties and investment opportunities across Bedford and the surrounding areas.
